Windows 7 When I click on a UDL file it opens in notepad as text file and not opening so that I can see 
the SQL server properties. 

This happens when the file externsions are not configured correctly. This is what u do. 

Start -> Control Panel -> Default Programs -> Associate File Type or Protocol with a program 
double click on .udl 
Select OLE DB CORE SERVICES 
and click on OK 
You should be good to go.
